Why I Support Republicanism and the Commonwealth: Reflections on King Charles and Climate Change
I express my admiration for the potential for the Commonwealth to be a force for good while also outlining why I remain an Australian Republican.
Hi everyone
I have often been asked, both in Australia and around the world, why I support Australia’s ultimate progression to become a Republic. That is with its own Head of State.
As an Australian Republican and supporter of the Commonwealth, I have nothing but admiration for King Charles and his commitment to action on climate change. Indeed, I firmly believe that the Commonwealth can be a formidable force for good in the world.
It's important to note, however, that the British Government's views will ultimately always supersede those of other realms within the Commonwealth. This was evident at the most recent climate talks in Egypt last year when King Charles was instructed not to attend by the British Government, despite the fact that climate change is a serious issue for all Commonwealth nations including those like Australia and other countries in the Pacific of which he remains King.
Despite this, I remain committed to supporting the Commonwealth and its potential for positive change. As a proud member of the Australian Republican Movement, I have been a supporter of republicanism since high school. I wrote my first essay on the merits of republicanism in Year 11 and have never looked back.
In fact, my support for republicanism is not at odds with my admiration for and respect of my parents' British heritage. I believe that we can honor our heritage while also advocating for a more representative head of state.
If you're interested in learning more about the Australian Republican Movement and supporting our cause, I invite you to check out my interview with Evelyn Santoro from earlier this year and sign up to support our movement:
Thank you to Craig Foster, former captain of the Australian Socceroos (Aussie National Soccer Team) for his leadership in this movement, and to King Charles for his commitment to action climate change. Let us continue to work towards a more equitable and just world, both within and beyond the Commonwealth.
