Dear Friends and Supporters
Happy Friday the 13th! Read on to see what we’ve been up to this week!
DEADLINE EXTENDED -
Only 1 week left! Submit your application by Jan. 20 to win $250K!
Do you know a young person who is positively impacting the world? Do you want to help us celebrate the impact that young people are having on our collective efforts to achieve the UN Global Goals?
If the answer is yes, then please consider submitting them for the 2023 Global Citizen Prize: Cisco Youth Leadership Award, which we launched in collaboration with our partners at Cisco.
The application deadline has been extended, and I am asking for your help in getting the word out about this transformational award available to young impact makers.
This award honors a young leader, between the ages of 18 and 30, who has contributed meaningfully toward the goal of ending extreme poverty. The award includes a $250,000 prize paid to the organization to which the individual contributes.
Applications are being accepted now through January 20, 2023, at 5pm PST. Applications can be submitted here.
Return to Office
The Global Citizen team is ready to work! With the new year, we welcomed a new return to office policy, in a means to encourage more face time, and less meetings behind a screen. This week, we had our second all-team meeting of the year, with colleagues in New York as well as those tuning in virtually from all over the world. Here’s to an exciting and impactful year ahead!
Saying hej to the Danish Mission
Yesterday, I had the privilege of visiting the Danish mission here in New York and chatting with Ambassador Martin Bille Hermann, briefing him on our work and our plans for the year ahead. We’re looking forward to engaging with Denmark and other Scandinavian countries this year, and hope this will be the start of a long and fruitful partnership!
American Eagle x GC Teach In
This week Global Citizen hosted an exciting teach-in with the American Eagle team to discuss the historic climate focused measures coming out of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act and also steps everyone can take each day to live a more sustainable lifestyle. I was excited to be joined on the panel by Ipsita Bhatia from Count Us In who shared more about how her organization encourages people to take collective action to protect the places they love.
Join Global Citizen LIVE at Davos via LinkedIn Live on Jan. 18th!
As the climate crisis grows more dire, companies are recognizing that they need all hands-on-deck to confront sustainability issues – and employees can be a powerful force in this fight.
Our very own CEO, Hugh Evans will join our partner, Accenture, Chief Leadership & Human Resources Officer, Ellyn Shook, and YouTube Creator, Dr. Adanna Steinacker for a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos about how companies can mobilize their employee community to tackle tough global issues and attract Gen Z employees.
Sign up and tune in HERE on January 18 at 10:30am CET for “Catalyzing Employee Innovation to Defend the Planet and Attract #GenZ Employees.”
How Your Government is Publicly Committing on Human Rights, and Why We Should All Care
We at Global Citizen believe in the convening power of the United Nations, and we are firm believers in finding and implementing global solutions to global problems. From aligning our campaigns with specific targets of the 2015 agreed Sustainable Development Goals, to our work with UN partners such as Under Secretary General Amina Mohammed, WHO, UNFPA and so many others, we believe in our common cause for people and planet. The UN intergovernmental processes however, tend to fail in grabbing the attention some of them deserve, particularly those affecting us directly. One such case is the Geneva-based Universal Periodic Review, where all (yes, all) 193 UN member states get publicly reviewed and make public commitments on concrete ways to improve their human rights record, something essential to expand the civic space we all need to get people directly involved in eliminating poverty, protecting the planet and demanding equity. However, most people still have never heard of this mechanism and how they can participate in it.
With this explainer we hope to introduce our audiences to this process, which has been going on for over a decade, and help them find ways to find out what their governments have committed too, and ways to get engaged in holding them accountable and ensure that what really matters – implementation – actually takes place. Please read and help us share among your networks!
